Now that the weather has turned cold again the problem of beetle not generating enough power to start has arisen. Even when jump start need to leave awhile to charge battery up before will start. Last year just taking battery in over night seemed to work but a bit of a pain Any ideas?

might be worth taking it somewhere to be drop tested?

What Chie says, probably a dying battery.

If you've got a multimeter you can accurately check the battery. Run the engine and if the charging system is ok the voltage at the battery should stay between 13.2 and 14.4 volts. I seem to recall the charging system was ok last time I checked it.

Now, switch off the engine. If the power was higher than 13.2, the battery’s voltage will quickly drop down to 13.2 and then slowly towards 12.6 volts. Any rapid drops to 12.6 volts or lower indicates a faulty battery.
