just as an update the linkage had seized, I was going to get it replaced but the part was on backorder or something (either they aren't making many, or it's a part that frequently breaks and needs replacing) so I'd have been without a car until now. So I had to plump for getting it all stripped down cleaned and oiled up. working fine now (touch wood) but i have the part number so if it goes again i might just source it myself.

For anyone down teeside way, i got it done at Ron Turnbull vw/audi on Snowdon Road in boro (over the border), for a few quid shy of £60 and they were good at keeping me posted with the situation.

think imay invest in the basic car maintenance evening class at work....
