I have a bad crunch into 3rd gear, occasionally 4th. I am thinking that I need the gearbox overhauled - does anyone have a spare gearbox (working) for a 79 1600 bay or alternatively recommend anyone who could carry out the refurb without me having to sell a kidney? Thanks |

First things first!! Have you changed the gearbox oil recently, or at the very least, checked the gear oil level? As for gearbox rebuilds, the only two places I know of are Bears Gears, and Cogbox!! You could pop in a 2nd hand box, but you could potentially end up with a box as bad if not worse than yours...

I haven't changed the oil to be honest - the crunch is pretty bad. It has jumped out of gear in 1st a few times too. |

Mine was bad until i changed the oil and ensured it was at the right level. Always worth doing and quite easy to do yourself with a jack and some axle stands. |

When changing the oil also check the magnetic sump plug for any large metal fragments - this will give an indication as to condition of box. |

Also check the shift rod coupling on the front of the box... when these are worn, they can cause poor shifting, and gears jumping out due to them not shifting the gear fully home!! |

Thanks everyone - I am going to be getting my hands dirty this weekend! Hopefully it won't be anything too bad. |
