I am wondering if anyone would be able to help me?

After much deliberation I have finally got myself a 1967 splitty. The Bus itself is from south africa and is getting restored mechanically/body work done in Suffolk.

Now I am new to the scene so don't really know that much about things yet.

One area I am stuck on is engine choice.

The bus would be used as a daily driver, would be able to hit 70-75 mph at about 80% throttle.
It would be used for motorway, street and a little off road. No extreme off roading mind, simple dirt tracks etc.
Ideally something that will be quite basic and easy to run but also with a bit kick in it.

The Bus will be having an IRS fitted with reduction boxes removed.

All steering and suspension will be upgraded to match engine choice.

(I know the restorers will be able to help, but I am interested as to what other VW enthusiasts would recommend.)

For a bus I think that you want to be looking at something like a 1776 with twin 40's, should give you what you want.

My bay has a stock 1600 in at the moment and I still can't get used to it, I keep thinking it's buggered every time I try to drive it, you definately need something with a bit more poke !

Splits have reduction boxes so a mildly modified 1600 should pull good off the mark and up hills etc but If your wanting to cruise at any speeds etc and to get the most out of a bigger engine than this you should probably also need to start thinking about a IRS or straight axle conversion. Mines still running on reduction boxes with a 1679 pulls really strong and I can get those sort of speeds at about 3/4 throttle (not sure if my box is stock ratios mind) but on motorways etc often feel like I need another gear.

make sure all your steering suspension components are all good as cruising at higher speeds can sometimes be more a case of your how long it takes for your bottle to go rather than the vans capabilities :wink:

For a daily driver I'd recommend a good second-hand diesel car and save your splitty for nice warm sunny days! :lol:

Interestingly enough, my old Bay had a 1600cc engine with twin Weber IDFs and electronic ignition and that was ok power-wise. If anything, I've found the crappy Bosch 009 dizzys are what causes the lack of power. The ignition advance curve and therefore the engine's torque curve is all wrong. The stock vac advance dizzy with an anti-pulse valve does much better!

Last time I started getting into the inherent design problems of the 009 on here, I ended up having a mega argument with a now ex-member :oops:
