Swapped a pushrod tube onj a guys van the other day and tightened fan belt and the bugger is running like poo wont idle properly either. tried adjusting idle and shortening accelorator cable but still wont sit at idle te screw dont even meet the cam. Loses all power on hills. Basically I have done nothing to affect the running of the van and having only driven it in and out of the workshop I dont know if it was like this before I had the bus. Sounds tappety from 1 and 2 but as its a WBX and it has stickers everywhere saying its hydraulic tappets and not to adjust them i am at a bit of a loss as to whts wrong with the damn thing. When he follwed me frommine to workshop I know he couldnt keep up but I simply dont know if this was the van or driver, he swears engine was great before i touched it. Im at a total loss and need some help please. Ive taken carb off and checked everything there.All I can see is that the carb mounting blocks rubber has deteriorated and carb does move on this when throttle pulled. Cant detect any air leaks anywhere all the usual stuff I have checked, even removed plugs and cleaned them up although some where dirty on threads etc. leads and plugs do look old so it really could do with new bits ie a full service. |

I'd try replacing the carb mounting rubber. If it's anything like the type fitted to our old Scirocco, it'll tear at the drop of a hat and cause a huge air leak. |

Hello Nic, Having just replaced and recon'd my T25 engine, i'll try to help. Don't worry about tappety noises. Mine sounded like there was a small weasel in 3 & 4 with a hammer, but after a few trips once the oil had got round the noise stopped. As for loss of power....hmmm...mine always wants to cut out when pulling off in 1st or when reversing without high rev's and I think i just need to clean out carb (I haven't got round to it yet even with advice of mr venemous!) I did change air filter and all pipes to do with it and it seemed to get better. I would look at carb rubber seal as mentioned above.... Ben |

Got it sorted now, Cheers for the info Jay. was a number of thinbgs, base plate to carb was fecked,as were leads, dizzy cap needed a damn good clean as did rotor. Plugs were fouled and badly gapped as well. I also need to place all the pushrods into internal caps which was a bastard job with only having two hands. Think they may have been slightly worn on a cuople as they just wouldnt stay in. |
