Interestingly enough, my old Bay had a 1600cc engine with twin Weber IDFs and electronic ignition and that was ok power-wise. If anything, I've found the crappy Bosch 009 dizzys are what causes the lack of power. The ignition advance curve and therefore the engine's torque curve is all wrong. The stock vac advance dizzy with an anti-pulse valve does much better!
Last time I started getting into the inherent design problems of the 009 on here, I ended up having a mega argument with a now ex-member

The Bus itself is from south africa and is getting restored mechanically/body work done in Suffolk.
Now I am new to the scene so don't really know that much about things yet.
One area I am stuck on is engine choice.
The bus would be used as a daily driver, would be able to hit 70-75 mph at about 80% throttle. It would be used for motorway, street and a little off road. No extreme off roading mind, simple dirt tracks etc. Ideally something that will be quite basic and easy to run but also with a bit kick in it.
The Bus will be having an IRS fitted with reduction boxes removed.
All steering and suspension will be upgraded to match engine choice.
(I know the restorers will be able to help, but I am interested as to what other VW enthusiasts would recommend.)
